As a Community Wildlife Habitat, Camano Islanders have made a
commitment to the natural wonders of the island by ensuring that
the wildlife essentials are provided. The project benefits the
wildlife by protecting, enhancing or restoring wildlife corridors
throughout the island. It also benefits the individuals in the
community who choose to live and work on Camano because of its
natural beauty.
The project is a community endeavor with individuals joining in
the project one yard at a time.
Besides the private residences, Camano has four demonstration
gardens for the public to gather ideas for their own backyards.
- Four Springs Lake Preserve
- The Camano Senior and Community Center
- Elger Bay Nature Preserve
- The Al Emerson Trail at Camano Island State Park
These areas offer guidance on identifying plants and using native
plants.
Elger Bay Elementary School, a certified schoolyard habitat,
connects to the Elger Bay Nature Preserve trail and provides an
extensive outdoor classroom for the children during the school
