Geocache Description:


The cache is located overlooking a glen in upper Deeside and can be accessed by at least two routes depending on which distance is preferred. The location is in the remains of a ruined village with near-by lime kilns. Within about 300 metres of the cache, there are three buildings still standing, one of which is a favourite with the 'Royals' and is still used as a 'rendez-vous' for shooting parties. An old barn is still intact and there is an interesting old croft with the remains of a thacket roof (under corrugated sheeting) and a wooden chimney. The overall area makes an ideal picnic spot and commands an excellent view of Lochnagar.

The shortest walk, there and back and totalling about
8 kms, is accessed from a parking spot #1 at N 57° 01.702:
W 003° 17.085, close to a converted kirk and a picturesque bungalow at the end of a tarmac road.

The second route involving a circular walk is to park at
N 57° 00.337: W 003° 20.279 (parking spot #2) and then return to parking spot #1 using a second vehicle or a local bus. Having, hopefully found the cache, continue walking anti-clockwise over open countryside in a westerly then northerly direction as far as a ford and then swing south-west/south returning to spot #2 through a wooded area. Total round trip is about14.7 kms but add another 1.5 kms if the bus is used. Please note that at #2, a £2 car parking ticket is required but there are toilet facilities available.
