Elephant Butte Lake State Park is comprised of numerous ‘sections’ which are located along almost the entire length of the lake. The section known as Hospital Canyon is just south of the dam and can be accessed from SR 177. Admission to all sections of the park requires a day use permit. A one day permit is $5.00 per vehicle. An annual day use pass, valid for twelve months from date of purchase, is $40.00.
If you are in need of medical care, you won’t find it at Hospital Canyon. What you will find is a great area for primitive camping. And, of course, a hidden geocache. It’s a small military green container holding a log and pencil, a couple of AA batteries just in case, a fish fridge magnet (talk about a fish out of water), a necklace and a $1.00 bill - play money that is.
