Hidden Bridge Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

GuelphHiker: This cache has had an almost 20 year run but unfortunately the bridge is scheduled for demolition, probably this summer, so I am now regrettably archiving it. I will pick up the container on my next visit to the area. Thanks to everyone who visited.

Geocache Description:

This “hidden bridge” that crosses the Eramosa River is no longer in use. It once carried a railway siding but the siding has been gone for decades. This is the third bridge across the Eramosa River upstream from it's junction with the Speed River in Guelph.

Much of the area around this bridge is low lying and swampy especially in the spring However, no swamp mucking is necessary. Remember that this bridge once carried a railway siding and railways don’t splash through swamps. They run on elevated embankments. So find the embankment. Hint: follow a well worn path until your GPS indicates the cache is about 120 metres due north. Then look for a very overgrown path along the former embankment.

You do not need to venture onto or under the bridge to locate the cache. However if you do, use caution, especially if you have children with you, since there are no sides on the bridge. Take particular care in the winter when the bridge may be icy.

The bridge is collapsing and part of the bridge is about two metres lower than when I placed the cache a few years ago. Please note that it is not necessary to go onto or under the bridge and the cache can be reached without going under the bridge.

Closest parking is off Stone Road at: N 43° 32.770 W 080° 11.950 (about 600 metres to the cache)
Winter Advisory: This closest parking area is not plowed or serviced in the winter so may be unavailable if there is a significant amount of snow on the ground.
Alternative parking is available at N 43° 32.775 W 080° 11.875 in front of the Barber Scout camp. From this location turn towards the old Bow Bridge and follow the hard packed gravel trail under the Stone Road bridge beside the river to avoid having to cross Stone Road. (about 700 metres to the cache). This route takes you within about fifty metres of the Bow Bridge cache GCQY09

Spring Advisory: This cache is in a low area close to the Eramosa River. When the river is in flood in the spring it can be hazardous - like all fast moving rivers. Please use extra caution.

Since the objective is that everyone find the cache, the hint below is fairly explicit. When you replace the cache please make sure that it is well covered so it won't be seen by passing muggles.
