Geocache Description:

A short walk along part of the lune valley ramble in the quite village of Arkholme

Parking for this walk is on street, at the church end of the village, (please do not cause an obstruction) Then follow the markers for the Lune Valley Ramble to the cache site.

Arkholme was known as "Ergune" which meant "Hill Pastures" and can be dated back to Norse settlers. The main street has many attractive 17th & 18th century houses and farm buildings. The 15th century church of St John the Baptist is situated at the river end of the main street adjacent to the earthworks of a 12 th century motte and bailey castle. Until the middle of the last century, Arkholme was famed for its basket making.
Arkholme is also 1 of the 50 'Thankful villages' in the UK.(those who sent men to the great war 1914-1918 all of them to return safely),Arkholme sent 59 men, the nearby village of Nether kellet (5mls away) sent 21 men all of whom returned, these are the only 2 in Lancashire.
The Main Street is by-passed by the main Carnforth–Kirby Lonsdale Road, running down from the road to the River Lune. The Lune Valley Ramble and Lunesdale walk both pass by Arkholme.

Note:

1. Part way just off the main path is a small wooden unfenced bridge leading to an island. There is no need to go onto the island but for children this could be fun - especially those that love muck, mud and water.

2. This walk in parts is against the River Lune and is unfenced so keep a close eye on children.

There is no need to trespass on railway or private property.

Warning:

CACHE MAY NOT BE ACCESSIBLE IN TIMES OF SEVERE FLOODING.
