Cimetière St-James / St. James cemetery
Avant d'être renommée Gatineau, la ville où se trouve cette cache s'appelait Hull. Mais avant de s'appeler Hull, la petite agglomération d'origine était surnommée Wrightsville, ou Wrightstown, du nom de son fondateur, un Américain du nom de Philemon Wright. Il a vu le potentiel de la forêt et des rivières de la région. Le bois coupé pouvait ëtre flotté jusqu'à Québec pour y être vendu. La région se fit connaître et une autre ville fut fondée tout près Bytown, qui est maintenant Ottawa.
C'est donc grâce a Philemon Wright que notre capitale nationale est située dans une si belle région. C'est aussi à cause de lui que notre belle région a si peu de vieilles forêts, mais on ne s'inquiétait pas vraiment de l'environnement en 1800, alors on ne peut pas trop lui en vouloir.
La tombe de Philemon Wright se situe dans le cimetière historique St-James, le plus vieux cimetière encore utilisé de la région. Ce monument est une obélisque rose qui peut être facilement aperçue de la rue.
Évidemment, la cache n'est pas située sur le monument. En fait, si vous partez de l'obélisque, vous devrez contourner quelques clôtures pour vous rendre à la cache, bien qu'elle soit à moins de 20 mètres du monument.
Bien que le cimetière soit situé a un endroit bien en vue, il est peu connu et peu fréquenté. Le fonds destiné à l'entretien de ce cimetière sera à sec d'ici quelques années et personne ne semble savoir ce qui arrivera ensuite.
Si vous vous intéressez à l'histoire locale ou à la généalogie, les nombreux monuments datant du 19e siècle sont très intéressants.
Il y a encore quelques enterrements chaque année dans la nouvelle partie (partie basse) du cimetière St-James. Bien que cela soit loin de la section où se trouve la cache, si vous voyez qu'une cérémonie est en cours, il serait préférable d'attendre un autre jour pour chercher.
Il n'y a pas d'heures d'ouverture affichées (il n'y a même pas de barrière à l'entrée), mais SVP ne cherchez pas cette cache la nuit. Des lumières dans le cimetière pourraient convaincre les voisins d'appeler la police.

Before being renamed Gatineau, the city where ths cache is was named Hull. But before being named Hull, it was a small settlement nicknamed Wrightsville, or Wrightstown, from the name of its founder, an American named Philemon Wright. He saw the potential of the forest and the rivers. Logs could be floated downriver all the way to Quebec City to be sold. The region attracted more people and another town was founded nearby : Bytown, now Ottawa.
So it is thanks to Philemon Wright that our national capital is in such a nice area. It's also because of him that there are so few old growth forests in the region, but no one worried much about the environnment in 1800, so we can't really hold a grudge.
Philemon Wright is buried in St. James historical cemetary, the oldest still-in-use cemetery in the region. The monument is a pink obelisk that can easily be seen from the street.
Of course, the cache is not on the monument. Actually, if you start from the obelisk, you will have to go around a few fences to reach the cache, though it is within 20 meters of the obelisk.
Even though the cemetary is in a busy part of town, itès hiding in plain sight. The funds for maintenance work will disappear in a few years, and no one seems to know what will happen after.
If you are interested in local history or in genealogy, the numerous 19th century monuments of the cemetary are very rich in information.
A few people are buried in the newer (lower) part of St. James cemetary each year. Even though that is far from the cache hiding place, if you see that a ceremony is taking place, it would be better to wait for another day to search.
No opening hours are posted (there is not even a gate that could be closed), but please don't search this cache at night. Lights in the cemetary might get the neighbors calling the cops.
