Geocache Description:

Welcome to a very special place. Established it 1807 it was at one time one of the more prestigious places to be interred in our Nations Capitol.

Many famous people, including President’s and their wives, were temporarily interred on the grounds until they could be transported to their home states. During the 1800’s many Congressmen were buried here, and cenotaphs erected for those who are buried elsewhere. It is an interesting place to wander around and observe the monuments. This is a very dog friendly place for those so inclined to geocache with their four legged family members.

Please comply with the following requests made the Board of Directors who graciously approved the cache.

1. Please do not drive on the roads within the cemetery. There is plenty of parking available on the adjacent side streets.

2. Do some planning before you do this cache. Side street parking is not allowed when RFK Stadium is hosting events. You will be ticketed and you may be towed.
This cache is a four step multi. Each of the locations you are guided to is the final resting place of an interesting, if not famous, individual. To find the dates required to calculate the coordinates to the next step, you may have to look all around the monument. For many of these older monuments information and plaques are on more than one side. And one of the locations will be very special to the ladies who geocache. After you post your find I will e-mail you an information sheet providing some details of the locations you visited.

The coordinates at the top of the page take you to the first location. You need to find this gentleman’s year of birth, year of death, the year Congress erected the monument and the year the Sons of the American Revolution placed the plaque. Using the years put them in the following format to obtain the coordinates of the second location.

Birth Year = ABCD; Death Year = EFGH; Year Congress erected the monument = IJKL and the year the Sons of the American Revolution erected their plaque = MNOP. Using that information, transpose the numbers into the following coordinates:

N = LF.(G+H)K.JBH W = 0(F-A)(J-K).(N-D)O.BBN

The above coordinates are the location for Stage 2; the resting place of a famous man and his family. Using his birth and death years, place them in the following format:

Birth Year = ABCD; Death Year = EFGH. Using that information, transpose the numbers into the following coordinates:

N = GB.CH.BG(A-E) W = 0(C+H)(D+H).CB.(F-G)FD

The above coordinates will guide you to the monument for Stage 3, the location of a very old and weather worn monument that you probably will not be able to determine the dates. Look to the West and you will see the modern monument of Gertrude and Hannah. Using the Death date of Gertrude = ABCD and the Birth date of Hannah = EFGH, transpose the numbers into the following coordinates:

N = DF.(F-D)(F-C).F(H-B)D W = 0(F-E)C.(C-E)F.(C+E)FC

The above coordinates will take you to Stage 4, the location of the final resting place of a Lady prominent in the late 1800’s. Using her birthdates and death dates, from the EAST side of the monument, in the format M DD YYYY use those numbers in this format: Birth day = A BC DEFG, Death day = H IJ KLMN to transpose into the following coordinates:

N = FE.HB.EHN W=076.(F+B)(J-I).(H+I)(B+C)L

The above coordinates take you to Stage 5, the final stage and location of the cache.

The Blue and Gold themed cache is dedicated to the men and women of the finest Navy the world has ever seen or will ever know. The cache has some interesting blue and gold items, including toys for the small ones. Please trade evenly, or up, and keep the blue and gold theme in mind. I placed the cache here because the Washington Navy Yard is only a few blocks away and it is a very special place in the past and present Navy. Interred in this Silent City is the final resting place of Commodore Thomas Tingey the first Commandant of the Washington Navy Yard.

Congratulations to Cudlecub for FTF. A belated special thanks goes to Falcon Loader who provided assistance with the goodies in the cache.
