The Ohio River is known for it's beauty, recreation and it's
commerce value. The barges that you see play a very important part
in the transportation of such commodities as coal, raw material,
grain, fuel oil and chemicals. In November 1959 the Greenup Lock
and Dam in Greenup, Kentucky was put into service thus phasing out
this lock. The two brick buildings at the entrance are all that's
left of Lock 27. There is no playground equipment however there are
picnic tables, a tennis court and a boat ramp. It's a nice place to
have a picnic and watch the boats go by.
Did you Know: 1 barge = 15 Jumbo hopper train cars or 58
semi-trucks 1 tow (15 barges) = 2.25 train units or 870 semi trucks
1 tow = .25 miles 2.25 train units = 2.75 miles 870 semi-trucks -
34.5 miles While approaching the caches keep to the left on the
road coming into the park. The road straight and to the right is a
driveway. Do not pull in next to the church as this is bus parking.
