This cache is #2 in a series to
show cachers around the Stillaguamish River. This cache brings you
to where the river meets the sea for the first time.
The lower parts of a river are very important to salmon fishermen.
It is said that salmon mass in the last saltwater pool, (which is
here) when the fish return in the early fall. The smooth bottom,
even sides, and relatively square channel make for easy trapping or
netting of the returning fish, which often will not yet have
changed noticeably from their ocean phase.
This place is very popular with salmon anglers, especially during
the odd year (at least in this area) humpy salmon run. There are
times when no less than 100 are trying to fish this pool, and only
a few are catching all the fish from the "sweet water" up near the
head of the pool.
This cache will take you on a walk across a farmer's land. The
state has negotiated access to the river for fishing and other
purposes, in this case, caching. The gate is along Norman Road east
of Silvana. The gate is marked by a red "No
Shooting" sign high up on a post. Park along the road, and
follow the road through the field to the river, about 0.3
miles.
Update on 07/23/11: This cache is now back up and ready
again for cachers. The container size has been changed to a small.
The cache has room for small items and travel bugs. Please make
sure you bring a writing implement. Although it would have fit just
fine, elected to leave a pencil out in favor of swag.
