Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the southerly margins of a large body of water known as Te Waihora, or Lake Ellesmere.

Te Waihora means “water spread out” and is an apt descriptive name for this low-lying, immense lagoon in a flat landscape. In pre-European times, the lagoon was of importance to the Ngai Tahu people as a source of food and resources. Numerous bird species were hunted such as brown teal, blue or whistling duck, swamp hen and paradise duck. Eel were caught all year round as well as flounder, whitebait and yellow-eyed mullet. The golden sand sedge and flax were also gathered here. Sadly, in recent years the lake has become polluted by farm run-off and no longer sustains its former abundance of life. A few hundred metres down the road is a little fishing kaik typical of many such places around New Zealand.
The cache is a large, black camouflaged caterer's margarine container, large enough for most travel bugs, even the real chubby ones. When hidden it contained two film canisters suitable for micro-caches, an alarm clock, a Connect-4 game, a yellow keyring, a GSV No Fixed Abode geocube, a pack of playing cards, a plastic poncho, a farmer's dog whistle, a Harrods address book, a logbook and two pens.
