Coalwood was the first cordwood settlement & also the largest & longest in existence . Tar-papered dwellings lined a single street with a one room school house in the center with about 20 students. At the end of the street was the store and the only pump in town. And I don't know if it was considered a town or not. There was 40 - 50 families mostly of Finnish descent. What's there now you ask? Nothing! Most of the buildings were moved to Forest Lake area and Chatham I believe. The cache is a square rubbermaid container. This is on a snowmobile trail about 2 miles from M- 94.
