Little Fish Lake Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dog Knows: I looked for this cache myself in August 2018, but couldn’t find it. The patch of bushes has expanded significantly since the cache was hidden, so my personal landmarks didn’t work anymore. I’ll check next time I’m in the area and remove it if I can locate it. I still think this is a great area of Alberta, and have fond memories of hiding it with my kids who are not so young anymore.

Geocache Description:

An easy family cache, and a great place to hike, play, picnic, and camp.

Little Fish Lake makes for an interesting side trip when you are in the Drumheller and East Coulee area. Also in this locale I can highly recommend the town of Wayne (a
brass cap and a cache) and the Altas Mine and East Coulee School Museum, both in East Coulee (with a cap and a cache for a bonus). If you have the time, check out the Hand Hills Rodeo Grounds (and the cache that is located there). Don't forget to bring a camera and your creative imagination.

Our kids, aged 5 and 7, had a major hand in the placing of this cache. We think it is an excellent place for a family outing.

If you are planning to visit Little Fish Lake Provincial Park, leave your fishing rod, swim suit, and canoe at home. The lake dried up a few years ago. It used to be home to a few cottages, boating, fishing, and beaching, but no more. (As of 2007, two years after this was originally written, the lake seems to be refilling with water. We were here on the September long weekend and even went for a paddle.) Never-the-less, it is an interesting part of Alberta to visit. We usually camp here once a year and explore the surrounding area. In September or October, you can almost count on having the campground to yourself.

Park in one of the campsites and hike onto the low hills north of the campground. Please resist the urge to drive off road to the cache. This is a provincial park. We should demonstrate that caching is eco-friendly. It will take you less than two minutes to walk to the location.

It is a medium size lock and lock container in a camouflage bag. It should be easy to find. For the enjoyment of the next cachers, please try to make sure the lid is sealed, and the cache covered well when re-hiding.
