Geocache Description:

Triangle Center II - The Circumcenter

Cache is NOT at the listed coordinates, but that's a good place to park.

To find this cache you will be given, or need to determine, the coordinates of three points located in Northfield and Dundas. The cache is located at the center of the triangle formed by the three points. It's possible to visit all three cornerpoints by car or bicycle.

Details:

Cornerpoint #1. This one is at the NW corner of Northfield, entering on Hwy 19, just as you come to the 45 mph sign. So you don't get rear-ended there, we'll give you those coordinates, viz. 44º27.721'N 093º12.047'W, which in UTM is zone 15, 484028 E, 4923210 N. Note that the use of the UTM coordinates may make some calculations easier!

Cornerpoint #2. Continue on into downdown Northfield. Just as you come to the main drag, you will find The Corner Bar (which in 2019 became the Reunion restaurant), at Fifth and Division. That's Cornerpoint #2. To be precise take your reading curbside, on Fifth, about in the middle of the building.

Cornerpoint #3. Head SW on Hwy 3 to downtown Dundas. Find its Corner Bar. To be definite, take your reading in front of the building by the yellow curb.

The Circumcenter. Three points, if they're not in a straight line, determine a circle. Its center is known as the circumcenter of the triangle formed by the three points. Hence the circumcenter must be exactly the same distance from each corner.

Another way of obtaining the circumcenter is to find the intersection of the three perpendicular bisectors of the sides of the triangle. Why? Consider one side and its two endpoints. The set of all points equal-distance from those two points is the perpendicular bisector of that side. Doing the same for all three sides yields the result.

If you're successful in locating the cache, please include your method, encrypted, in your log. Thanks. If not, email us about your attempt and additional hints can be provided.
