Geocache Description:

A cache placed for Halloween, full of Halloween goodies. The ground is flat, but can be very wet and muddy - especially after rain! WELLINGTON BOOTS ARE A MUST!!!

The cache is reached by bridleways and public footpaths not far from the village of Pepper Arden, past a castle (now a B&B) and near St Mary's Church, South Cowton.

On route to the cache is Pepper Arden Bottoms:-

“Pepper Arden Bottoms is part of the site of a former post-Ice Age mere (lake) which filled up over the centuries with silt and peat nearly 10 metres deep. It is one of the most important places in the County for the quality of this sequence of deposits, which contain evidence of climatic and landscape change through preserved organic remains such as pollen, other plant material and insects, stretching back to beyond the end of the last Ice Age 13,000 years ago.

The value of the site was discovered in 1998 by the Centre for Wetland Archaeology, University of Hull, through work commissioned by the present owners, the Carstairs Countryside Trust. The site is managed with a high water table to protect the deposits and also to enhance the landscape and benefit wildlife, particularly wetland birds.

The acquisition and management of Pepper Arden Bottoms has been supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, Yorventure through Yorwaste Ltd, and the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme, the Countryside Agency, James Goodhart, North Yorkshire County Council and HAmbleton District Council and through the help of the Horton family and DEFRA (Countryside Stewardship Scheme).”

Water birds, nosy cows and friendly horses can all found along the way!

The cache originally contains Halloween type 'treasures', including:-

Squeaky rat,
Rubber spider,
Spiderweb candles,
Halloween stickers,
Etc.

And Bug Eyed Bob TB made an appearance.
