Geocache Description:

Pleasant walk on the side of Great Mell Fell, previously part of an army shooting range but now owned by the National Trust. It would be best saved for fair weather. The walk is uphill, can be muddy and is quite overgrown in summer, when the bracken can be very high.

Park at N 54 36.826’ W002 55.146’. Walk up the track and enter the wood via the second stile on the right (not the first one by the National Trust sign). There are extensive views to the south over Matterdale to the high fells beyond. After finding the cache it is well worth picking up a track heading north-east diagonally up the fellside, then heading north-west through the wood and on over long banks of heather and bilberry to the summit of Great Mell Fell, as it is a spectacular view point for Blencathra, the many-ridged mountain which lies north of the A66. Be warned though, it can be very cold and windy on the summit and it’s probably further than you think. Your GPSr may come in useful to find your way down the fell, as it’s surprisingly easy to lose your way on the lower slopes and end up among some nasty bogs and boulders!

You may want to AVOID THIS CACHE IN JULY AND AUGUST when the bracken is very high and the flies are a torment!!

The container is a small butty box and contains log book and pen, and a couple of swaps.
