The Main
Carpark has been closed for work to be carried out so you are
recommended to use what was the second parking spot but which is
now the main parking place. Its a
little longer but still a nice walk.
The above co-ordinates are for the car park of Holcot wood.
These aren't the co-ordinates for the
cache. So please don't spend time in the car park
looking for a cache.
The idea for this cache started when I met Jonathan Plowe, the
woodlands officer for the area. I was planting a cache in College
Wood (See A Picture Paints A Thousand Locations - GCQNGB),
when Jonathan commented that Geocaching is a great way to get
people out into the woods, something the Woodlands Trust
encourage.
He mentioned another wood that he manages, that never gets
visited he expressed that he was keen for more people to come and
enjoy the area. This area is called Holcot Wood!!!
Holcot Wood is part of the Reynolds Wood area managed by the
Woodlands Trust and is a great place with views of the surrounding
areas and the Brogborough
Lake. The woods are full of some very interesting old trees;
it's a very quiet and peaceful place.
You may see some Buzzards, Muntjac and if you are quiet and
lucky some Chinese Water Deer.
This is a great cache to do as a rest stop on the
M1, it's less than a mile from junction
13 on the A421. The closest train
station to this cache is Ridgmont.
The Sustrans cycle way 51 runs near the woods
for cyclists and horse riders. You can reach the woods from Bedford
or Milton Keynes using the cycle way. For more information and maps
have a look at this web site http://www.sustrans.org.uk
For more information about Holcot Wood and the surrounding area
have a look here
The cache you are looking for is a 1.6 litre plastic container,
with a snap lock lid. It contains the usual collection of
treasures. Hope you have fun finding it.
This is the second cache we have placed in Holcot Wood. This one
is a multi cache that involves visiting a few locations in these
great woods and then onto the final cache.
Please be aware some of clues are old and derelict, so
please be very careful around them. You don't need to enter any of
them to the find any of the clues or the cache.
Right now on to the clues for the cache, you can do these in any
order. But this is the quickest way to walk around the forest and
it ends at a nice comfy seat to work out the final
co-ordinates.
Ok first go to N52° 03.161 W000°
36.225 here you find a great little pond or mini lake (See
photo above), when does a pond become a lake. That's not what we
are here for anyway you need to find a little plaque dedicated to a
guy called Jaques. How many times does his Christian name
appear on the plaque? (B)
Now you need to go to N52° 03.108 W 000°
36.331, you will find something that I was surprised to see
in the middle of the woods. You will need to find two numbers on
two large circles. You need to look for 7(C)0 -
2(D).
Ok lets gets moving on to another sign at N52° 03.067 W 000° 36.268 dedicated to Nan, look
at the third line of text because (E) = the length
of the first word and (F) = the length of the
third word.
Right we now need to go to a sign close to any New Zealanders
heart at N52° 02.957 W000° 36.454. You
will find a phone number at the bottom 01788
(G)(G)3121.
Right now I guess you need to have a sit down (I know I did),
you will find a convenient seat at N52°
02.944 W 000° 36.606. This seat is dedicated to Irene, how
long is her middle name? This will become (H).
The final Co-ordinates are:-
N 52°
(D)(B).(H)(
G + 1)(B) W 000°
(E)(C +
1).(F)(C)(H)
Note
There is
a new fence close to the location of the final. To avoid
having to climb this, from the seat where you found (H), go
down the headland of the field until you are a short way past the
cache before going into the woods. Do not approach
through the woods from the East. There are no fences to
cross on this route.
Thanks to Jonathan Plowe from the Woodlands Trust for permission
and help in placing this cache.
