Fish Eagle: This cache is probably gone, and we've decided to archive it.

Although access to the location is OK, the signs are off-putting. They're there to try to curb trout poaching along the river. It was also a "nothing" hide, and one of our earlier amateurish caches - so, it's time to go to cache heaven......

Geocache Description:

Hidden near one of the cache owner's favourite trout fishing holes.

The cache is next to the Sabie river, by the trout waters controlled by the Sabie Trout Angling Club. Fishing is available for day visitors on a rod fee basis (trout tackle only) - day tickets can be purchased from the fishing shop or the Grand Tearoom in town. This deep pool, named Bridgett's pool after Bridgett Elkington, whose late husband did sterling work for the club over several years, normally holds many fish - see if you can spot them. Rainbow trout are very well camouflaged, and are most easily spotted by the shadows that they cast on the bottom, on sunny days. Also present in this pool are smallscale yellowfish, which can be seen glinting, especially in the rapids, and are only found in east flowing rivers in Mpumalanga and Limpopo, at altitudes over 600m.

The obvious route when following a GPS is through a small forest - this is frowned upon by the owner of the forest. Only use this route on foot (park at sign private road 10) after heavy rains if the other routes are too wet. Rather get down to the river just past the sawmill (turn off the tarred road, and take the first track left along the smaller powerlines), or near the horseshoe falls turnoff, through a pecan nut orchard. There is no problem with access along the river, just keep out of the plantations, and don't fish without a permit.

The cache is a plastic container with initial contents of logbook, pen, fish eagle token, assortment of trout flies, and a fish hook for the big ones.
