Geocache Description:

Good View of Milpitas and a little more history.

This Site over looks my home town of Milpitas and nearby Cities. “As GOES MILPITAS, So GOES THE STATE” In 1863, political discussions centered on the Civil War. Rev. Thomas Starr King of the Unitarian church in San Francisco became a major supporter of the Union cause. During one of King’s speeches in San Jose, a band of Milpitas citizens must have agreed with his ideas for the future of California, because one man stepped forward and projected onto the wall a lantern slide poster reflecting Milpitans’ pride in their community. The message read, “As Goes Milpitas, So Goes the State!” The gesture was well received and attracted attention from the newspapers and the press. The assurance that “the Man from Milpitas would show us the way” was quoted from one end of the state to the other. Satirical vaudevillians in the l920s remembered the little ditty and found it amusing to think that an educated man would want to live in Milpitas or that Milpitan’s might lead the state.
