A two-location multi-cache located on Putney Mt. It is a .7 mile hike along a blazed trail. The trail is on undulating terrain through a mixed hardwood forest to the furthest location and a fantastic vista. At the first "cache" location you will find only the coordinates to the final cache (no log book). The final cache is small, black plastic jar with screw lid. (2" around x 4" tall) so please trade only small items and replace container exactly as found.
The listed coordinates are to the trailhead parking lot -- NOT THE CACHE COORDINATES!
NOTE: Road to the trailhead from the west (Brookline) is closed in winter. It is open year round from the east (Putney).
To determine the coordinates to the first cache use the following clues: Find the information kiosk/sign in the parking lot. Determine the total of the three listed acreages. Divide the sum by 10. Subtract 105 from the quotient to determine "AAA" (the last three digits of the latitude). Add 407 to the quotient to determine "BBB" (the last three digits of the longitude).
First cache: N43 000.AAA = ((Acres + Acres + acres) / 10) - 105; W72 35.BBB = ((Acres + Acres + acres) / 10) + 407.
It will be rare to not meet muggles on this hike. Please be discreet!
This is a great hike for dog lovers and also a great snowshoe in winter. Both finds should be relatively easy in the snow. Bring binoculars in the fall to watch migrating hawks and also a camera for the fantastic views and photos of you and your geocaching friends astride the "elephant!"
