This cache hunt will take you along the "Upper Falls Trail" at the
beautiful Salmon River Falls.
The Salmon River Falls has been a source of hydroelectric power
since 1912. The "Upper Falls Trail" , where my cache is located, was
built in 1995 with the help of the Oswego County Youth Bureau. Due
to the easement boundary limitations, most of the trail is located
close to the river causing it to be affected by high water releases
from the dam upstream. These releases can cause dramatic changes
depositing debris or eroding the existing trail. Caution is
advised. "Running from the Falls East across the easement to Dam
Road, the trail extends along the river through dense forest and
over dry riverbed to the base of the Salmon River Reservoir Dam".
The average grade of the trail is 10% but not more than 23% slope.
The average cross slope is 5% but does not exceed more than 1%. The
average tread width is 32". Minimum clearance is 18". The surface
of the trail is soil or limstone. 50% of the trail is firm. The
Salmon River Trail network is closed from Sunset to Sunrise. Park
in the parking lot at the Trailhead and proceed down the hard pack
trail towards the cache. As you near the cache site, you will
realize that the hard pack trail will soon become a thing of the
past. I have rated the trail difficulty a three, but this could
swing either way depending on the weather. Rainy weather would
warrant good waterproof hiking boots!!! The cache is an ammo can
filled with the usual Geocaching goodies. It is located not too far
off the trail. Please make equal trades and be sure to rehide the
cache so that it is not visible to mugglers. Don't forget to bring
a camera and maybe a picnic lunch!! The view of the falls from the
trail is spectacular!! Congratulations to: "ab2ms" for a FTF.
