Geocache Description:

Ammo can within sight of the former Hutchinson Naval Air Station.

On July 11, 1942, the Navy announced the second Kansas naval reserve air base site would be south of Hutchinson. Until the station was completed, the Navy used Hutchinson's municipal airport. The first training planes were N2S-3's and N2S-4's and in 1944, training began for crews of PB-4Y Liberator bombers. The first PB4Y arrived at Hutchinson on March 11, 1944, and 19 students and officers reported for duty on March 20. Additional bombers, officers, and students arrived shortly thereafter, and training began on March 27. The navy's original Liberator training plan at Hutchinson called for the use of 17 planes and the instruction of six new crews each week, but the demand for crews necessitated an increase in bombers to 87 by December. Although the Hutchinson Naval Air Station was originally planned to quarter only male sailors, the navy informed officials at the station that members of the women's reserve would be assigned to the base. The first WAVES arrived in June, 1943. During its wartime peak, there were over 5,000 personnel at HNAS. The base has been activated and demobilized a couple times. It has also served as a SCCA racetrack. The airport itself is now the Sunflower Aerodrome Gliderport. A private glider airport. Other parts of the old base are used for ambulance and bus manufacturing, the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center and the Hutchinson Community College South Campus.

The cache is located within sight of the control tower, but not on the airport property. The airport is private property, so please DO NOT trespass.
