Geocache Description:

This is a nice little rest area along route 11 detailing the
history of the road system in the area.

The cache is located in a rest area on route 11 headed toward Fort Kent Maine. This road has a long history and the sign at the rest area explains its importance. Please sign the logbook and return the cache to its resting place. This road is well maintained but does cut straight through the woods of northern Maine so watch out for the moose.

At the cross roads there was once a forestry fire tower and the camp was the fire wardens home. The Oxbow Fire tower located in Oxbow Plantation was a 20' wooden tower and was last standing in 1929. It was believed to have been used as an auxillary tower by the Maine Forest Service at Camp Dana.

But the most interesting story of this location is from longer ago. On June 13th 1850 there was a fire at this location and the people living in this remote area were all killed as their farmhouse went up in smoke. Juliann Hows ago 40 and her children Juliann age 3, Harriet age 5 and Benjamin age 15 months. This all happened while their father, Benjamin Hows was in town after supplies.
