Geocache Description:

The cache is located at Bartram's Garden in West Philadelphia. It is a 4 in. square plastic Tupperware type container with log book and fun items for trading.

Bartram’s Garden is the oldest living botanic garden in America. It was established by John Bartram in 1728 and was devoted to the collection and study of North American plants. The cache is located at the historic garden which is open daily except holidays to the public without charge from 10 AM to 5 PM. The gates are locked after dark. There is fee for a tour through the restored Bartram House. The entrance to the site is at 54th and Lindbergh Blvd., and there is a parking lot. No pets are allowed. Access is available but limited from Dec. 15 to March 1. There is now a non-gated passage way through the fence, so there is no need to climb over it. Approval for placement of the cache was obtained. Bartram’s Garden was established on the banks of the Schuylkill River by John Bartram. He and his son, William, are credited with identifying and introducing into cultivation more then 200 native plants. The plants were sought, among other reasons, to add to the phamacopoeia of the era. King George III honored John Bartram as Royal Botanist in 1765, a position he held until his death in 1777. Visitors to the Garden included Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson. One can see the rare Franklinia, a tree named after Benjamin Franklin. The restored grounds are now operated as a museum and public garden by the John Bartram Association.
