Geocache Description:

Take an easy stroll around the village of All Cannings in the beautiful Vale of Pewsey. The stroll will include some field by ways and may not be suitable for buggies or wheelchairs in the wetter months. I have attempted to place the clues in an order to take you on a circular tour that will take about an hour (depending, of course, on whether you can resist the hostelry!)

The name Cannings is thought to have originated from the name of an Anglo Saxon tribe who colonised the area in the sixth and seventh centuries. The territory in which they settled, Cannings Marsh or later even known as Vale of Candle Marsh, included Bishops Cannings, All Cannings and Allington. The village stretches from the Church and Manor Farm in the south to an area known as Townsend in the North. From archaeological finds it is known that the village actually stretched further to the south, beyond the church, at some time. In the 14th century All Cannings was one of the most populated villages along the Pewsey Vale, and even as late as the 19th century would of had a bigger population than it does today. As you walk through the village you will find evidence of the old village interspersed with the new. Houses and cottages of timber frame and thatch, concrete constructed houses of the mid 19th century and of course the modern day constructed buildings. Two houses of note in the village are Bridge House built by the 4th Lord Ashburton, of the Baring banking dynasty and The Grange which once belonged to the Hitchcock family. More history of All Cannings can be found on the Wiltshire County Council web site. There is some off road parking at N51°21.539 W001°53.466, alternatively you will be able to park in the village. From the suggested parking space, walk across the road and down the by way, to the edge of All Cannings. When you are in front of the houses turn left along the road and walk to N51°21.399 W001°53.810. From here answer - What was the population of All Cannings in the year 2000AD? (Answer = ABC) Continue on to N51° 21.(C-A)(C-B)3 W001°53.(C)15 and answer What is the date on the left hand “Best Kept Village” plaque? (Answer = DEFG) Continue on to N51° 21.(D)(F)(G) W001° 54.0(E)(G+D) and answer On what day in September 1944 did Anna Maria Crees die and at what age was she? (Answers = HJ & KL) Continue on to N51° 21.(L)(H)2 W001° 54.(J)3(L+H) and finally answer What is the date you can see on the wall of the establishment? (Answer = MNPQ) Now you might like to stop for some refreshments and calculate the final cache location. N51° (P-A)(E-F).(K-B)(M+J)(G) W001° (C-L-D)(H+D).(N+M)(G+Q)(A+D+H) If you would like to continue on the circular walk to find the cache, continue on in the same direction you were walking when you reached the last clue and join the field footpaths.
