Brunton's Bridge -
Walhalla
This cache is placed on an old bridge across the Thompson River
in the Walhalla Area. You can reach it via a number of different
routes. You should be able to get to it in a 2WD, even in the wet.
The last couple of km.s is a little bumpy, but should not be a
problem. I approached from the Walhalla-Tyers road via Cowwarr Rd,
then the Old Walhalla Coach Road. It was approximately 13 km.s from
the sealed road.
The cache is a now (thanks to Dak and A2YG) a 1 litre Sistema
box. It is on the EASTERN side of the bridge, magnetically
attached to the first bridge support behind some branches.
Note: The co-ordinates I came up
with were inconsistent. I have now updated the published
co-ordinates with those supplied by DAK's Emu Mob. The description
herein should ensure that you find the cache easily. There is no
longer pedestrian access across the bridge, so if you come from the
Walhalla side, you will need to make a river crossing.
The bridge is located where the small settlement of Brunton used
to exist. It is on the old road into the Goldfields of Walhalla,
now known as the Old Walhalla Coach Road. It was built in 1888 to
replace a previous bridge which was deemed unsafe. It is nearly 220
ft long and is 50 ft above the river level. The supports are iron
cylinders 2ft in diameter, filled with Portland cement.
When replacing the cache, please make sure you hide it at the
same height to avoid it being washed away in the floods. Also,
please ensure that it is behind the branches so that muggles don't
spot it.
