Geocache Description:

In Harry Griffin Park, La Mesa, Ca.

December 14th, 2005 my grandfather, Baudino Salome De La O passed away. He was 92. This cache is for him. He had a number of nicknames, but Curly was the one I'll always remember. Grandpa spent most of his life a chef and a great one at that. My fondest memories of him were of him showing me how to cook something. It made it interesting with his thick spanish accent, but I always came away with a special moment. This will be a traditional cache with a twist. If you can, when you log your find, please include a favorite family recipe so that we all can enjoy, either in the logboOk or here.. While you are at the cache site, sit awhile and reflect on life, and anybody you may have lost. Here is our family gift to you, this is a dish we had every Christmas Eve:

Pop’s Posole

Many a Christmas Eve we gathered in the kitchen of one of the Auntie’s and enjoyed the hot soup that had become such a huge part of the family’s traditions. Pop was always the one to make it until he became too old and ill and then it fell to the Aunties. This year Pop’s great grandson Nick (Team Bandito’s Number two son) made it for the first time. Pop died on 12/14/05 and so we honor him by passing on the recipe.

Pop never measured…so use your best guess on amounts and make it to taste.

Take 2 cups of dry hominy, cover with water and cook for about 2-3 hours, until the kernels burst.
Add pork roast, pork neck bones and some tripe.
While this is cooking, chop up a whole onion, 3 or more cloves of garlic, a few bay leaves, oregano, some red dried chili pods (not to many though).
Let it cook forever; add seasoning (salt, pepper, chili powder, etc to taste).
You can buy the posole seasoning but be careful because it can be very spicy!

Thanks everybody!

Team Bandito
