Geocache Description:

An easy walk through the SW Florida pine barrens (hence the name).

The county cut some trails on the north side of Curry Creek along the eastern city limits of Venice about a year and a half ago, and since then it's like this project was forgotten. Which is fine by me, because it give me, my boy, and the other neighborhood kids a great place to bike through and run around in!

The trails consist of flattened swaths through the pine barrens that run along the north side of Curry Creek, which are starting to become harder and harder to follow since the plant life is slowly reclaiming the area again since it was initially cleared. The terrain is completely flat though, and the scrub isn't too tall yet, so any experienced hikers will have no problem getting to this cache. It's a bit over a two mile round trip from the trail-head on Pinebrook Road, just north of the bridge over Curry Creek.

The only tough part is skirting a soggy marsh and crossing over a slippery log at coords N 27° 07.034 W 082° 25.399 -- don't fall in! And, as always when being near water in this part of the world, keep an eye out for alligators, although, in the last two years I've only seen one 5-footer back there. You can also expect to see gopher tortoises, butterflies, hawks, buzzards, etc., and at night, you'll see raccoons, possums, and great horned owls.

The cache is a large, round, plastic screw-top container full of trinkets that my kids dug out of the toy box. Enjoy!
