UPDATE: 5/19/07 In the aftermath of the Griffith Park fire, ALL
hiking trails south of Zoo Drive (that's all of them) are closed
until further notice. $1000 fine and six months jail for violation.
The one exception is the East & West Observatory Trail which is
open from Ferndell directly to the Observatory. For closure
updates, see lagriffithpark.blogspot.com//.
On my way to Snorkasaurus Gulch, I explored for the first time
these lower realms of the park, avoiding the schizophrenic
Peke-a-poos that think they are Dobermans along with the proof of
their passing that their owners, in direct defiance of the posted
ordinance, neglected to remove, and left a couple of caches
behind.
This one requires little exertion; apart from the initial climb
from the Greek Theatre parking lot the trail is fairly level. Cache
is a large nut jar, camouflaged and hidden, hopefully, to the
casual observer. Keen-eyed geocachers, however, should be able to
spot it just off the trail. Initial contents: rubber bracelet, mini
bubbles, Play-Doh, seed packet, carabiners, etc.
Several other caches are nearby, including
Aberdeen Highlands,
Snorkasaurus Gulch and
Henry's Trail.
Caution: Griffith Park is home to various and sundry
nuisances/dangers, including ticks, snakes, poison oak, coyotes and
even mountain lions. Take plenty of water and exercise all due
caution.
