Geocache Description:

The house behind this microcache was the first house that we lived in when we moved to Japan.

(The house in-reference is the brown-trimmed house 3-13-16). I am a teacher at Kinnick High School on Yokosuka Navy Base and we lived in this house for about one-and-a-half years before we moved onto the Ikego housing area which you can see from the cache

We moved into this house just a few days prior to the terrorist activities on September 11, 2001. In Japan on this date, we had a typhoon pass through and when it cleared we got our first glimpse of Fujisan, which we could regularly see on a clear day just over the red and white smokestack. The terrorist activities and the increased security of the base required my son to spend almost 4 hours a day on the bus. We felt that this was way too long for an 8 year old to spend on the bus so the next year we were able to secure a student train pass for him and a parking spot for his bicycle at the train station and he reduced his travel time to school and back by half. (Now that we live on base travel time is even less.)

We loved this house and have many great memories. One summer when we traveled home we forgot to leave the AC on and we had a green interior when we came back after 6 weeks. Mold had grown on everything. We spent two days getting that mess cleaned up. Then we had a cockroach invasion.

We loved the landlord. My wife often teases me about spending too much time male-bonding with the landlord. She couldn’t believe that since I did not speak any Japanese and he didn’t speak any English that there wasn’t much conversation going on. But au contraire – we were “talking” about tools. What else needs to be said.

Be sure to bring a writing utensil. Muggles are abundant.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing the memories and, if you have a beautiful clear day, the view of Fujisan.
