The Vedder and Chilliwack River are home to all five species of
Pacific Salmon. It is also home to the Cultus Lake Sockeye run
which is on the endangered species list. Cultus Lake only sees
returns of approximately 200 fish!
This series will test your ability to tell the five species
apart. Do you know your fish?
You must do the first five caches in the series in order to
figure out where this final cache has been placed. In each of the
caches you will need to identify a picture of a salmon under the
lid. Once you determine what species it is, look at the sheet in
the cache container and collect the two numbers and letters that
correspond to the correct answer. All the caches have been placed a
short distance from parking. The final cache requires the furthest
walk which will only take you five minutes down a trail.
You will need to visit:
Something's Fishy #1: Washout
Something's Fishy #2: Slesse Park
Something's Fishy #3: Tamihi Rapids
Something's Fishy #4: Anderson Creek Pond
Something's Fishy #5: Borden Creek
Now that you have all your letters and numbers, plug them into
this:
49. A B . C D E
121. F G . H I J
These coordinates will take you to the trail head that the cache
is located on. Now...fish don't have a GPS to navigate their way
thousands of kilometres out into the ocean and then back to the
very stream they originated from. So, you can put away your GPS and
instead follow the instructions to locate the cache from the
trailhead.
1. Once you start down the trail you will walk into the
forest.
2. You will pass an unlucky van.
3. Walk down the steep hill and stop at the bottom.
4. Turn towards the river.
5. You see that big leaning tree over there?
6. The cache lay at it's base!
I hope you have a fantastic time with the series.
You may notice Adopt-A-River signs up and down the river. This
is due to the work of the Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup
Coalition. They hold 4 annual cleanups per year and take out tons
of garbage each year. If you would like to come to a cleanup, click
on the picture below to find out all the details. They were also
kind enough to let us hold a CITO event with them last year. We
plan on doing it again this spring.
