Just off the path at the side of Rigg Bay. Come and see how Galloway won World War II.
Park at the Galloway Gardens car park at N054.46.701, W004.22.228 (£2 in change needed) or park in Garlieston for free and walk round the coast. Take a leisurely stroll through the gardens (open March to October) or directly along the metalled road to the picnic table at N54.46.491, W004.22.214, which is a strong contender for the "Stinchar Challenge". After that, you're on your own. We had some problems with wandering signals because of trees, but the coordinates will get you close enough that the hint will work well.
When we started to some to this area there were two "hippos" in the bay, structures built to support the manufacture of the Mulberry harbour that was used in the D-Day landings in 1944. When we set the cache there was still one. Now there are none standing, although at low tide you can still see the remains of the last one near the marker buoy. At a very low tide you can almost walk out to it with dry feet. For the full story, visit the excellent wee museum in Garlieston.
If you reach Cruggleton Castle you have gone much too far, but it is worth the trip anyway as long as you are not afraid of heights. While you are there though, why not do our "Christmas at Cruggleton" cache?
