St Mike's Triangle Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Tatanka49: Bad day in River City. Third of 3 caches to come off line today. This one is being archived.

I walked the entire park in the daylight. There is no legal way of getting in there anymore. The park is so well maintained that except for a micro, there is no good hiding spot. I will consider a micro in the future. At some point I hope to get access to the cache to remove the camera and the travel bug.

Geocache Description:

This is a regular size cache that contains memories of New York City. And typical of NYC parks, CITO would be helpful.

NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT to reach cache from the highway. The GC maps show this cache on the highway. It is not. Google Earth shows it in correct place. Access through the park only. A fence has appeared but Flooded Tree found a hole on April 10, 2006 so I will leave it as available for now.

The area that the cache is in is parkland sandwiched in a triangle of land between the eastern and western Brooklyn-Queens Expressway connectors and 30th Avenue. The park was created in the 1940s from land left over from the construction of the BQE.

The nearby cemetery was named for St. Michael, an archangel who figures prominently in Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. He was adopted by Christianity as a saint of the Church militant, and is often portrayed wearing a coat of mail and carrying a shield, sword, or spear. Michael is frequently depicted slaying Satan and represented with scales weighing the souls of the dead; a "Policeman's Prayer" to St. Michael is said by those in law enforcement.

The land for the park was first acquired by the City of New York in 1941 in connection with the building of the BQE. St. Michael's is the largest park property along the expressway. The site lay unimproved until 1946, when plans were made to lay out the property as a park and develop it with playground facilities. A baseball field and spectator stands, handball, tennis, and basketball courts and other recreational options for young children were added, including a wading pool, swings, and slides.

The park area closes at 9 pm. During the summer months, the field is active with baseball and softball players. In winter there is an occassional football game, so you may not want to attempt this cache when games are in play.

The cache was set up as a cache of memories about New York. The initial cache contains old NYC photos, a NYC map, a WG$, a NYS lottery ticket (If we win, let's go 50-50.) and a New Year's TB. I have included a camera so you can take your own memory photo. Please record your picture number. I will post the photos when the camera is done. There is also my signature wooden nickle that is not a trade item. Please add or trade other NY items from the past or present.
