Geocache Description:

This multi cache is part of the circular walk around the Carew Castle and Tidal Mill site. It's a mainly flat walk picking up clues from various locations along the way and is suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs, children etc. The hardest part will be retrieving the cache without being muggled!!

A bit of history about Carew Castle……

The Normans under the reign of Henry I built Carew castle on the site of an Iron Age settlement at the end of the eleventh century. The castle was originally built of earth and wood and was later replaced with a stone castle and much of what remains of Carew Castle today was the work of Sir Nicholas de Carew. The castle was extended and improved during the late fifteenth century by Sir Rhys Thomas altering both the east and west ranges.

The castle was developed from a medieval fort to Elizabethan manor by Sir John Perrot (allegedly the illegitimate son of Henry VIII) who was granted governorship of Carew Castle at the beginning of Queen Elizabeth's reign. He however failed to complete the development because he was to be taken to the Tower of London, tried and convicted of High Treason. Queen Elizabeth appeared reluctant to sign his death warrant and he died a natural death there in 1592.

He must have been as ‘sick as a Perrot’ not to have completed this magnificent transformation!

Now the cache……

Parking (free) can be found at the following co-ordinates:

N 51° 41.852’ W 004 ° 49.690’

Once parked up turn left out of the car park and join the circular walk around Carew Castle and Tidal Mill. The first clue (A) can be found at the following co-ordinates:

N 51° 41.898’ W 004 ° 50.041’

How many roof light windows are on the building on the left?

Clue A = _

Carry on walking round past the French Mill and past the first bench, at the second bench is clue B. The co-ordinates for this bench is:

N 51° 42.007’ W 004 ° 49.987’

The bench is in memory of Ray Harrison who lived from 19_ _ to 2001.

Clue B = _ _

Do ‘rest your feet and admire the view’!

Clue C and D are a short distance from here and again are taken from a bench dedicated to someone. The co-ordinates for this bench are:

N 51° 42.015’ W 004 ° 49.931’

This bench is in memory of Gordon J Knowles who lived between 7/7/_ _ (Clue C) and
_ _/12/97 (Clue D)

Clue C = _ _

Clue D = _ _

Clue E is taken from the date the GWOBR Award was awarded. This can be found on the trig like stone at these co-ordinates:

N 51° 42.001’ W 004 ° 49.795’

The award’s year is 197_

Clue E = _

Almost there …….

The final clue can be found at the war memorial near to the car park at the start of the walk. To get there follow the walk around, over the bridge, up the hill and back into the site. The co-ordinates for this are:

N 51° 41.855’ W 004 ° 49.673’

You are looking for a telephone number engraved on the fence surrounding the memorial.

‘Manufactured by A.J. Thomas Welding & Fabrication Services 01646 6815_ _ ‘

Clue F = _ _

Now all you need to do is work out the following equation for the final co-ordinates using the clues gathered and you will find the hidden cache.

N 51° 41. (C - D)(F + 10)'

W 004 ° (B + 12). 8 (E x 2) (3x A)'
