Geocache Description:

This cache is a Decon Container

Vasquez Rocks is a wonderful place to visit and to cache. The 900-acre park was named for Californio bandit, Tiburcio Vasquez. The surreal Vasquez formation, cradled in the Soledad basin, was formed by violent earthquake about 25 million years ago. To the western edge of the park lies the San Gabriel mountain range, and to the north are the Sierra Pelonas. Caught in the squeeze between these two major mountain ranges, the Vasquez formation took shape.

Tiburcio Vasquez (1839-1875) was the last of the Mexican banditos to terrorize California in the 1870s and 80s. After it became too hot for him in Northern California, Vasquez headed south. After a string of robberies, rumors spread that the bandito and his gang were in the nearby hills (part of which is now called Vasquez Rocks) with plans for a raid on Los Angeles. Vasquez was eventually caught hiding in a home near the present corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Kings Road and was later executed.

The area took on the name Vasquez Rocks with the advent of movie making. The earliest known film ever made at the rocks was a 1905 Rudolph Valentino flick. The Hollywood character Zorro is a take-off on the character of Tiburcio Vasquez. Before that time the area was simply known as "The Rocks."

In the decades to follow, many films and television shows have used the Rocks as their back-drop.
