Ohne ein wissendes Auge ist heute kaum mehr zu erkennen, dass
das Gebiet um die Ortschaft Kelmis, oder La Calamine, ein
Bergbaugebiet war. Zahlreiche Gruben förderten Erzvorkommen von
Blei und Zink. Der Name "La Calamine" kommt von dem Begriff
"Galmei" für ein Gemisch von Zinkerzen. Aus dem romanischen
"Cal(a)minis" ("bei den Galmeisteinen") entstand der gemanische
Ortsname "Kelmis".
Die meisten Minen sind bis auf ihre verschlossenen Schächte kaum
mehr zu sehen. Es gibt aber noch Gebäude von Minen die heute
anderweitig genutzt werden. Eine sehenswerte Ruine ist die Mine
"Schmalgraf". Auf dem ehemaligen Gelände der Mine steht bei N50°
41.803 E5° 59.199 eine Informationstafel zur Geschichte der
Mine.
Die Ruine steht leider direkt hinter einem Weidezaun auf
privatem Gebiet. Man kann sie aber östlich von N50° 41.841 E5°
59.196 sehen. Um euch nicht zu Verbotenem zu verleiten, liegt
der Cache ausserhalb davon, bei der kleinen Abraumhalde.

Without a knowing eye you might not see that the area around the
city of Kelmis or La Calamine was a mining area. A couple of mines
produced the orebody of lead and zinc. The name "La Calamine" comes
from the word "Galmei" what stands for a compound of zinc ore. The
Romanic word "Cal(a)minis" ("near the Galmei stones") changed to
the Germanic name of the city "Kelmis".
Most of the mines cannot be seen today except some covered pits.
There are mine buildings which today have a different use. A
remarkable remains is the ruine of the mine "Schmalgraf". On the
former mine area you find an information panel at N50° 41.803
E5° 59.199 that tells the story of the mine.
Unfortunately the mine building itself is behind a fence on
private property, but you can see it from N50° 41.841 E5°
59.196 to the east. I don't want you to do something forbidden,
so I put the cache outside this area at the small mining dump.

Sans un oeil savant aujourd'hui il n'est pas reconnaissable que
la region de Kelmis ou La Calamine etait un region des mines.
Nombreuses des mines ont extrait les gisements des minerai du plomb
et zinc. Le nom "La Calamine" dérive du mot "Galmei" pour un
mélange des minerai. Le nom Romaine "Cal(a)minis" ("chez les
pierres de Galmei") a changé au nom Germain de la ville
"Kelmis".
On ne peut pas voir la plupart des mines, seulement quelques
buses couvertes. On y a des batiments des mines qui sont utilisée
pour autres choses aujourd'hui. Une ruine remarquable est la ruine
de la mine "Schmalgraf". Sur le terrain de la mine ancienne à
N50° 41.803 E5° 59.199 il y a un tableau avec des
informations sur la mine.
Aussi que la ruine se trouve derrière une cloture sur un terrain
privé on peut la voir de N50° 41.841 E5° 59.196 à l'est.
Pour ne pas vous inciter de faire quelque chose prohibé, la cache
est au dehors de ce terrain au petit terril.
