ATTENTION: Do not attempt to find this cache in the winter months without planning in advance for dangerous snow and low temperature conditions!
Terrain:
Winter conditions can be harsh and extreme to say the least. You need to be well-prepared to hike 4 or 5 miles in conditions ranging from light to moderate ice and snow to severe cold temperatures and blizzard conditions. It is very easy to get disoriented and there is no easy out. Cell phones will not work in the area. Multiple day weather forecasting is unreliable. In all but the most moderate conditions, you will require either cross-country skis or snowshoes to get to the cache/Lodge.
Also, it's very easy to get turned around, even with your GPS working. You can encounter whiteout conditions, and there are ponds and streams that you can stumble upon/into without warning.
I strongly suggest the following:
1) Contact someone local to the area if you're planning a trip in Winter, and let them know your plans.
2) Be sure to tell someone where you're going, how long you're going to be gone and when you'll return, and how to contact you (via the Lodge). Actually, this is good advice in all seasons!
3) Use a four-wheel drive vehicle if possible and bring chains either way, bring extra food/water, wear layers of clothing, sunglasses, and a hat.
4) Get a topographical map of the area before you go.
Summer/Spring/Fall conditions are much more benign, and you can probably drive all or most of the way. You may need to hike about 1/2 mile during these seasons.
DO NOT under any circumstances cross the railroad tracks unless you are absolutely sure you can make it across safely. There are two sets of tracks, and the trains move a lot faster than they appear to be moving. If you see, hear, or feel (put your hand on the track) a train, don't take a chance.
This cache is NOT located near the tracks, and there is a tunnel going under the tracks big enough to drive a vehicle through. Use it!
The cache is a small, round plastic container with the word "Geocache" on it.
