This cache is on the old Sacramento Northern Railroad right a way. The tracks have been gone for many years. In many places the right-away is now bike paths but not here.
California's Sacramento Northern Railway was one of the nation's most unique electrified lines. It was a line of great character, with many interesting features that set it apart from other interurbans and continue to endear it to railfans today.
In the center of downtown San Francisco, a traveler could board one of the line's massive wooden interurban combines to begin a 185-mile journey through the heart of northern California. The trip opened by crossing San Francisco Bay on the lower deck of the gigantic Oakland Bay Bridge. After passing through several prosperous East Bay communities, the train was taken across Suisun Bay aboard the car ferry Ramon. A high speed run through the Sacramento Delta's rolling farm country brought the train to Sacramento, California's capital and the journey's half-way point. North of Sacramento, the electric train sped past more farms and orchards, stopping briefly in the important city of Marysville. Finally the train arrived at its final destination, Chico. The trip took just over six hours, including stops and the ferry ride.
