This cache is in a red plastic Folgers coffee can. It contains a notebook log, several pens and pencils, a West Virginia state quarter, a plastic figurine, paper clips, a key chain, a heart shaped stress ball, post it notes and a brief history of the Staunton Pike.
The cache is located just off of Rt 47 two miles west of the junction with Rt 33 at Linn WV. Rt 47 was the Staunton Pike connecting Staunton Virginia with Parkersburg Virginia (The pike was built and used before West Virginia became a state). Construction began in 1838. The Pike was the route through the Appalachian mountains connecting northern Virginia with the western Virginia border. It has recently been designated as a National Scenic Byway. At any time of the year the drive between Linn and Parkersburg is very scenic but in winter the road can be a challenge.
This is the first of what will be a series of caches highlighting lesser known West Virginia historical sites, areas and events.
