Geocache Description:

Getting to Darwin Ferry can test one's navagational skills. The cache, an 50 cal ammo box, is a very short walk from the ferry landing.

The Darwin Ferry has been around for almost 190 years, over half of those years this location has been it's home. It was established by John McClure in 1818. The town of Darwin, IL, across the river from here, used to be known as McClure's Bluff prior to 1823 & becoming the county seat for the next 15 years. At the time this ferry started, it was said that there were about 30 ferries on the Wabash river, Darwin Ferry is the only one still in existance today. It has been sank & rebuilt many times.

From what I can find, this paticular ferry was built in 1988 for $30,000. It is still used by farmers to move equipment back & forth across the river.

Please be sure you have ample gas in your tank, this area isn't highly populated.
