Geocache Description:

Land Locked Quadrant (LLQ) / AKA The Burlington Woods - Signs

After geocaching for a while now, I have discovered numerous wooded parks and historical sites in my home area that I never knew existed. However, I was completely surprised to find that no one had placed any geocaches in the Land Locked Quadrant (AKA The Burlington Woods) - basically my backyard.

This area has a long history that dates back to revolutionary times as it supposedly contained "The Bedford-Woburn Minuteman trail" used by the Woburn Minutemen to join in the fight in Lexington and Concord. More recently the area was used as an automobile junk yard with most of the stuff removed in the early 70s. In the mid 70s, the area became a legal battle between a developer and the towns of Burlington, Lexington and Bedford. The case ended in a payment to the developer and the towns of Lexington and Bedford buying up a 10' buffer on the town lines to prevent right-of-way access to the land thereby preventing future development. Since then, the area has become popular with hikers, paint ballers and especially mt. bikers who are responsible for building and maintaining most of the existing trails. This cache covers a large part of the area and in particular, some of the more interesting features contained within.

Since the area is not conservation land or an official park of any type and is simply "Burlington Town Land", there are no restrictions about nighttime or seasonal use. So, attempting this cache after dark is legal, and don't be surprised if you see a few mt. bikers as well.

For the nature lovers, don't be surprised if you happen to run into deer, fisher cats, coyotes, foxes or wild turkeys among other things. The cache is mostly kid/child friendly with some minor "off trail" travel at some locations, but is rather long in distance. You may want to do my other cache (GCRW0E - LLQ cars and trucks) which is a little easier in the area first to get familiar with the area and terrain.

The theme of this cache is “signs”. At each location, you will find a sign of some type for which you will use the letters (A=1, B=2, C=3, …, I=9, J=0, K=1, L=2, …, Z=6) and/or numbers in conversions or calculations for the next point.

To start, you should park at the end of Reeves Road in Bedford (N42 29.543, W71 14.449). There is a trail head right at the end of the road that leads to many well traveled paths.

Part 1 - Proceed to the beginning coordinates listed for this cache (N42 29.438, W71 14.418). At that location you'll find a granite marker that is the corner marker for the town boundaries of Bedford, Burlington and Lexington. On this marker you will find letter #1 on the NW face, and letter #2 on the SE face.

Coordinate #2 = N 42 29.(#1)(#2)8, W 71 14.(#2)99

Part 2 – At coordinate #2 you’ll find a sign with letters (#1-#29) on it.

Coordinate #3 = N 42 (#16)(#4).(#4)(#8)(#9), W 71 (#22)(#18).(#28)(#10)(#16)

Part 3 – At coordinate #3 you’ll find a sign with letters (#1-#8) & a 4 digit number (#9-12).

Coordinate #4 = N 42 (#9)(#3).(#9 + #9)(#8)(#1), W 71 (#2)(#7).(#3)(#1)(#7)

Part 4 – At coordinate #4 (aka Pride Rock) you can stand and wave to friends below. Take a look to the North and you will see a large sign with an exit number and a route number. Because this is a high traffic area, the cache is hidden a little distance from here. To find the cache, head (244 + exit number) degrees for (route number) meters.

The cache is a small ammo can and initially contains:

1 battleship game
2 tollz
1 deck of magic hat cards
1 charades game
