“INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST”
The Indiana Spirit Quest series of
geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries
built by Hoosier Pioneers. In just over a year and a half, the
quest has grown to over four hundred thirty caches hidden in over
forty Indiana counties, and Ohio and Michigan and the hiders have
grown to over twenty cacher teams, most of which of which are
comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over
900 cacher teams have logged over 11,000 finds. One cache machine
found 102 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours
only).

SPIRIT QUEST #433
"FRANKLIN"
Welcome to Franklin Cemetery in Seward
Township, Kosciusko County. You can see the faint outline in the
earth of the foundation of the old church here as well as part of
the stoop.
To find this cache, go to the coordinates,
thense: 60' due east; 20 feet north; 20 feet west;30'north;40' feet
west and 50'south. Good Luck
Several of the earliest settlers of Seward
Township were buried in the Franklin Cemetery. As judged by an
account in the Combination Atlas Map of Kosciusko County, 1879,
these included:
Girdon Hurlbut who settled with three sons
in 1837.
The first white child born in the
township, Rhoda L., daughter of C.B. & Gratia Hurlbut, was
likely his grandchild.
Milo R. Barbour (Barber) who settled in
1838 and presented the petition signed by 220 citizens for creation
of the township in 1859. The township was taken from the east side
of Franklin Township. He was appointed the first
trustee.
John and Robert Robinson who settled in
1838. The first religious meeting - Presbyterian - is said to have
been held in the cabin of John Robinson.
Others who were among the first settlers
were: John and Mark Smith, Wm. Anderson and Nathaniel
Paxton.
No marker exists for James Garvin who
operated the first blacksmith shop, planted the first orchard and
was sent to the State Legislature with a petition for the first
road - north and south through the center of the
township.
There are no Franklins among the 120 plus
folks buried here. But some of the earlier graves belong to: Rhoda
Linn 1841 (Altho tombstone says 1849); Samuel A. Robinson 1843;
Jonathan Smith 1846; Thomas Hundson 1847; and William D.
Robinson 1847.
Among the Civil War vets buried here are
included John K. Bucher of Co. C, 16th Ohio and Sylvester Barber,
Regiment unknown.

Las Vegas Churches This may come as a surprise to those of you
not living in Las Vegas, but there are more Catholic churches there
than casinos. Not surprisingly, some worshippers at Sunday services
will give casino chips rather than cash when the basket is passed.
Since they get chips from so many different casinos, the churches
have devised a method to collect the offerings. The churches send
all their collected chips to a nearby Franciscan Monastery for
sorting and then the chips are taken to the casinos of origin and
cashed in. This is done by the Chip Monks. Didn't see it comin' did
ya?!?!
