Geocache Description:

This cache is near a very nice waterfall. The cache container is unique and large. Be careful! The terrain is very steep in spots.

There isn't any good parking area here - you just have to pull off on the side of the road. The ground is a little flatter near the bridge.

This used to be an offset cache, but now it is just a regular cache. Visit Union Falls at N 31 deg, 28.892 minutes, W 89 deg, 10.159 minutes, then go for the cache container at the coordinates listed above. Your best approach to the cache will probably be from the backside, following the creek downstream from the falls until you are close.

Cedar Man has contacted me a couple of times now with some of the history and his memories of Union Falls. His comments are copied below.

I am one of the three fine upstanding citizens that helped place the stand that the plate is on. Must have been in the 50's. It was originally a platform to dive from. I'm glad to see our work proved time worthy. Lots of fun was experienced in this place. I grew up a mile+ east of the bridge.

More on Union Falls, or "The Waterfall" as I knew of it. Back in 1957 or '58 I think it was, several of the local swimmers decided we needed a diving board. Joe Ellzey (who still lives in the Union area, I think), David Davis (now in Dothan, AL) and I (Tom Turner, Huntsville, AL) started making the holes in the rock with a butterfly punch and hammer. It took two long afternoons to get the holes deep enough and flared at the bottom. We concreted the pipe with the plate in the front hole and used two long bolts with large washers at the rear end. After the concrete dried for a few days, we were ready to bolt on the spring board. Joe, another local Jim Tisdale (I think) were given the springboard from the county barn at Moselle. David and I met them to install the board. The best I remember the board was a pine 2 1/2" by 14" or 16" and about 12' long. David and Joe took the board down each winter for several years to save the board. The board was long but it would send you sky high. It was not unusual to see 20-30 people at the falls on a Sunday afternoon lined up to take a dive. Thanks for stirring my memories. When I get back down there I plan to locate your cache. You are welcome to post any of these memories on the cache site.
