Hidden Treasures of North Florida
Steinhatchee
Falls
Background: The Steinhatchee Recreation Hub provides
visitors an opportunity to spend some time exploring the coastal
ecosystems of the region. Public lands managed by the District and
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have preserved
over 35,000 acres of coastal marshlands and river floodplains that
provide clean water and habitat for many types of animals such as
wading birds and fish.
Steinhatchee Falls is a great place to picnic, fish, or enjoy a
quiet moment watching the river cascade over the falls. The
three-foot waterfall is formed by a limerock outcropping in the
river which extends north of the falls and, historically, served as
a crossing point for Native Americans and settlers in the
1800's.
Other places to experience in Steinhatchee: Say hello to Dean
Fowler and company at the Steinhatcheee Landing Resort, grab a bit
to eat at Roy's Restaurant overlooking the gulf, or rent a boat at
one of the marinas in town. Fishing opportunities abound and
between July 15 and September 15th, the region is home to some of
the best scalloping in the state.
This is one of the prettiest places. THis park is open from 8AM
to 7PM and there are picnic tables, boat ramp, portable bathroom
and a trail that meanders along the river. A great place for a
picnic. Enjoy!
