pavrita: We have moved off island and can no longer service this cache. It was fun to lead people to one of our favorite places on Maui. Since the last cache can no longer be found, and we can not replace it, we must archive.

Geocache Description:

Waihou Springs Trail above Makawao Town. 1/2 mile gradual 1/2 mile switchbacks w/ full tree canopy. View of lava tube caves at trail end.

This area offers several trails. The geocache is near the end of the Springs trail, a nice hike 1 mile in and 1 mile out.

The trail head is 4.9 miles up Olinda Rd from main intersection of Makawao town. Look for brown sign on right side of road "Tree Growth Research Area" where there is plenty of space to park off the road. Bring drinking water, bug repellant, and a long sleeve shirt (it's chilly). Follow the signs for Springs Trail. The Overlook at the top of the swichbacks offers a bench and, on a clear day, a view of Maui's North Shore.

To find the cache look for the pile of rocks to the left of the sign that says "Stay on the Trail" just before the trail ends at the bottom of the switchbacks. (See picture of Banana Rock.) The cache is in a plastic container w/ blue lid.

WARNING: do NOT venture into the unstable rock fall area at the base of the cave wall - heed the sign alerting the trails end, look for the cache, and then go back and explore other areas that this park has to offer. Have a great visit!
