Le château fut construit par les Andlau. Pendant la guerre de Trente Ans, il est pris et occupé par les Suédois. Il est détruit en 1678 par les troupes françaises du maréchal de Créqui. Il a servi par la suite d'habitation forestière. On dit même qu'en 1695, le garde chasse Franz Ettighoffen, au service de la famille d'Andlau, a tué le dernier ours vosgien à proximité du château! En 1794, il est vendu à un commerçant qui le démantèle pièce par pièce, il à été classifié au registre des monuments historique en 1927 et consolidé en 1930 et encore tout récemment en 2006.

The castle was built between 1250 and 1264 by Evrard d'Andlau. In 1633 the castle is occupied by Swedish troops. In 1678 it is plundered by the troops of the marshal of Crequi. After it is confiscated during the Revolution, the castle is occupied by foresters until 1796. Then it is bought by an industrialist who, from 1806 on and with great indifference, starts to dismantle and sell the castle stone by stone. In 1822 the castle, which by now has become a ruin, is bought by the community of Andlau. It is classified as a historic building in 1927 and is consolidated around 1930. et recently in 2006
