Conservation land broadly refers to all the natural areas within the North and South Central Local councils. On a specific level, this targets all our Nature Reserves and green areas which are linked via a system which is unique to Durban, known as D’MOSS ( Durban Metropolitan Open Space System). Briefly, the Council has created green corridors which meander through Durban, joining vital core areas of conservation significance and allowing fauna and flora an avenue along which they can travel, ensuring diversity and eliminating genetic isolation. The Park is home to many splendid giant trees, which are indicative of this forest type. It was proclaimed primarily to protect the Natal White Stinkwood (Celtis mildbraedii), perhaps one of South Africa’s rarest trees. There are numerous large specimens at Pigeon Valley, an isolated nucleus within an ever-growing city. Another rare tree occurring at Pigeon Valley is the Natal Loquat (Oxyanthus pyriformis), a night flowering tree with sweetly scented blossoms. Pigeon Valley is an excellent destination for birders, with a checklist of well over 100 species. The ornithological jewel of the reserve is a rare winter visitor, known as the Spotted Thrush (Zoothera guttata). A visit to the reserve during the winter months will guarantee a sighting of this bird. Mammal species present in the reserve include Blue Duiker (Cephalophus monticola), Large Spotted Genet (Genetta tigrina), Slender Mongoose (Galerella sanguinea), Water Mongoose (Atilax paludinosus), Banded Mongoose (Mungos mungo), Rock Hyrax (Procavia capensis) and Vervet Monkeys (Cercopithecus pygerythrus). A Natural Heritage site which has original coastal climate forest in which many of the forest giants, particularly the Natal elm, survive. A good birding site for forest birds in particular. contents: 1 mouse trap 1 cockroache chalk 1 reading light 1 box of crayones 1 thermomoter 1 lazer pointer logbook and pen
