This one will get you off the main trail and let you do a little bushwacking.
There are several karst features in the area known as Little Africa. At least one of them is believed to have been used as a hiding place for runaway slaves traveling on the underground railroad. Another is described by the Forest Service as having "prehistoric animal features". This one is called Bear Den Cave and I was able to explore it years ago. Deep inside the cave were numerous pits dug in the packed earth of the cavern floor which had apparently been excavated by bears or other prehistoric mammals. Large claw marks were still visible along the edges of the pits and looked as though they were dug recently.
