Cache is one of TWO (this micro and an ammo box) at Hathaway Park off Washington Loop Road east of Punta Gorda. The Loop is exactly what it sounds like, an oval road that intersects with U.S. 17 twice as it loops through the Shell Creek watershed. From U.S. 41 and I-75, take first intersection with Wash. Loop at sign for Shell Creek Park (which refers to a mobile-home park, not Hathaway). Park is on left shortly after mobile-home park.
Park has picnic tables, boat ramp, restrooms, hiking trails and even a horse trail, all amid a scrub oak, creek-side setting that screams Old Florida. Parking is "pay-and-display." Parking costs $.50/hr. and is worth it. Paths are well maintained, terrain is flat and there are benches throughout for resting and sight-seeing. Cache is a magnetic micro (see hint) located in a shelter overlooking Shell Creek. BYOP.
