Old 395 Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Senior Sleuths: The trail is open again so we could check on the cache and the WPs. Nothing survived the fire...all WPs are gone/burnt and also the final cache tree is gone/burned. There is heavy construction both under the bridge and in the new bike bridge area causing a trail detour. I hate to archive this cache, but due to the circumstances at this time, any sort of cache is not a good idea.

Geocache Description:

NOTE: 11/5/06 Because of ongoing construction and landscape changes, I am eliminating WP1 until I can be sure it will stay. The 1st WP now will be at these coords: N33 03.567 and W117 04.374

If you like a slightly challenging multi on a great trail with some history, this is a good cache for you. Parking is in the same area as the Mule Hill caches (turn south off Bear Valley by the golf club across from the mall), but this trail will take you west rather than east. This is a popular biking/hiking trail, especially on weekends. The hike is around 3 miles round trip on mostly flat, easy terrain. The beginning of the trail is a bit noisy with lots of construction on I15 and nearby traffic but a path remains open. Once you go under the freeway and meet the trail, you will be walking on the old abandoned highway 395. Where the roadbed ends, there are plans for a bike/pedestrian bridge to be built over Lake Hodges. This is the same spot the old 395 bridge use to be. After the roadbed, the trail narrows to a dirt path. You will be walking along the north side of Lake Hodges where you will see ducks and birds in a peaceful surrounding. The trail continues on another 6 or 7 miles after the final cache.

You will need to find (now 3) waypoints before the final cache. All WPs are close to the trail and do not require any bushwhacking or trampling of sensitive plants. This trail is part of the San Dieguito River preserve and the cache has been approved by the SPRP rangers. Please abide by the rules of the park. You are looking for the last 3 numbers so assume all WPs are N33 03.xxx and W117 04.xxx.
