This cache has been archived.

Rattlingcrew: This one has been down for an extended period, like way too many of the Kansas caches, a rough year for caching! Thanks, Glen

Geocache Description:

This is an easy one. Parking within about 100' across flat terrain. You are looking for a small water bottle with camo tape.

This cache is located somewhere in Eisenhower Park. The park is the center for numerous recreational activities throughout the year. There are several structures of note from this area, including:

A lighted fountain and garden area which are quite nice in spring and summer.

A gazebo near the fountain which was erected to honor departed members of the Heritage Homes Association, which was a group of local homeowners dedicated to the preservation of the numerous historic homes in Abilene. If you have time stop by here and stand in the center of it and start talking to hear a neat audio effect.

A band shell which houses community band concerts in the summertime. This shell replaced the previous structure that burnt to the ground in the late 80's.

3 tanks and artillery cannons that children love to play on and around. The more modern tank on the south side has only been in place for about 10 years. Previously an antique steam locomotive stood there, but was moved whole through town and now is under restoration by the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad Association, which offers a short 5-mile train ride east toward Enterprise, Kansas.

The Abilene stadium, built by the WPA in the 1930's, once was the base for a racetrack which ran around the northern 1/2 of the park. Part of the retaining fence still stands around the south side of the old track. Later it was used as a baseball field until a new diamond was constructed west of where the tanks sit. Today it is most notably the home for Wild Bill Hickock Rodeo which is held annually in August during the Central Kansas Free Fair.
